“The Hill” in Blacksburg will be the site of the Pioneer District golf tournament today. Four Pioneer teams will be vying for a chance to advance to the Region 1C tournament as well as taking home a trophy.
The tournament is scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m. today and Craig County will be competing along with Eastern Montgomery, Bath County and Narrows. The teams will play 18 holes, going around twice at the nine-hole Blacksburg course.
Craig County had a qualifying round last week and freshman Ryan Boyer earned the right to play in the number one spot with a best ever score of 42 at the Hanging Rock Golf Club. Thomas Boyer will be the number two man after shooting 47 followed by Colton Wolfe at 57, Easton Wright at 59 and Cam Hanes at 61. Audrey Keffer did not play in the qualifying round and will be the number six player for the Rockets.
The teams will be playing for a trophy as well as a chance to compete in the Region 1C tournament, scheduled for the Great Oaks course in Floyd County on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
The champion and runner-up from each Region 1C district will qualify along with the next two best teams from the region. Each district will also qualify four individual golfers determined by the four lowest scores attained by golfers who are not members of the qualifying teams.
“We’ve had a good week of practice and I think we have a chance of qualifying,” said Craig coach Geoff Boyer.
Also last week, Craig County twins Thomas and Ryan Boyer competed in a First Tee event at the Hidden Valley Country Club and Thomas finished first among 11 competitors. He shot a 42 while Ryan shot 47 at the Salem course.
