The Craig County Rockets will be to get back on the gridiron this week. Craig will be in Nickelsville this Friday to take on Twin Springs in a non-district game, their first since Sept. 4.
The Rockets had a scheduled bye last week, but the week before that they were already heading to West Virginia to play Greater Beckley Christian when they got the call that the Christians didn’t have enough boys to play. So, the Rockets come into this week’s game with just two games under their belts while Twin Springs has played five times.
The Titans come in at 1-4 thus far. They’ve lost to Providence Academy of Tennessee, Northwood, Pineville of Kentucky and J.I. Burton last week, 21-14. Their win was against Unaka High of Tennessee, 34-24, and with a schedule covering three states it’s hard to know what kind of team they actually have.
Craig County coach Jimmy Fisher remembers the Titans. Last year Craig pulled out a 35-28 win in New Castle in the first meeting ever between the two schools.
“It was a shootout last season,” said Fisher. “On film, they have done a little bit of everything offensively. We aren’t sure what we are going to see. They have two really good running backs but are still searching for their identity. “
The Rockets are 2-0 and have yet to be scored upon after 48-0 and 68-0 wins over Galax and Bland County. The Rockets have been practicing hard despite being off the past two Fridays and don’t expect to show any rust this week.
“We just kept our nose to the grindstone the past couple of weeks,” said Fisher. “Just trying to get better and I think we have. Looking forward to finding out on Friday.”
