The Craig County softball team had a wild affair last week when Eastern Montgomery came to New Castle for a Pioneer District softball game. The Rockets out hit the Mustangs, 10 to six, but still ended up losing 22-7.
“It was an off day for pitching, which happens,” said Craig coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “Unfortunately they all just had theirs on the same day. Walks did us in, and errors in the field made it worse.”
Craig pitchers Neveah Hypes, Jenna Boitnotte and Annalise Zimmerman combined to walk 14 batters and hit two more. The Rockets committed nine fielding errors to make 13 of East Mont’s runs unearned.
“I was encouraged by our offense,” said WolfeCarper. “We struggled to hit East Mont’s pitcher last year, and the girls got the bat on the ball well this game. Jenna Boitnotte has been especially solid this season.”
Boitnotte was two-for-three with a double and three runs batted in and she also reached base twice when she was hit by pitches. Kallie Fisher also had two hits and drove in a run. Zimmerman had a triple and Annalise and Aleah Owens had one RBI each.
The Rockets had a make-up game with Smith Mountain Lake Christian on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. They’ll head to Parry McCluer on Thursday, then come back home to host Narrows next Tuesday, April 15.
