The Craig County baseball team will head to Buena Vista on Thursday to take on host Parry McCluer. Game time is 5 pm for the Pioneer District matchup.
The Rockets are still looking for their first win after dropping two district games last week. They hosted Eastern Montgomery on April 1 and were shut out by the Mustangs, 12-0. Hunter Sowers pitched six innings for the Rockets and allowed just four earned runs while striking out six.
“Hunter kept us in the game for a while on the mound but our fielding had a couple errors that led to a five-run third inning,” said coach Jamie Mick.
Cam Huffman reached base twice with a hit and a walk and Jaycob Wolfe and Marcus Donithan also had hits. Huffman and Wolfe each stole a base.
On Thursday the Rockets were back home to host Highland and dropped a 10-2 decision. The Rams got on top early before Huffman came on to pitch in relief and settle things down. He pitched four innings and allowed just one earned run.
Offensively Luke Potter had a hit, scored a run and stole a base. Wolfe had a double, drove in a run and scored one and Isaiah Wente had an RBI double.
“The Rockets did show a lot of fight in this game and cleaned up the fielding dramatically over the past few games,” said Mick. “We are definitely moving in the right direction to turn this around and be a scrappy team ready to battle with anyone, but we have some adjustments to make at the plate. We just need to keep getting better every day.”
Craig was scheduled to play at Bath County Tuesday before Thursday’s trip to Parry McCluer. Next week they have two home games, hosting Narrows on April 15 and Giles on April 17.
