At the Monday, May 19th meeting of VFW Post 4491, Diana Smith was presented with the VFW Public Servant Award. Sheriff Lloyd T. Craddock nominated Smith for the award, which the organization then submitted her nomination to the national VFW. “Our local dispatchers have won this national award and honor twice in the past three years,” stated Joann Smith, Post Quartermaster.
The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) selects emergency medical technicians (services), law enforcement, firefighters, dispatcher and explosive ordnance disposal technicians personnel to receive the VFW Public Service Awards. Candidates must have demonstrated that, one – they had been recognized by their colleagues or those they serve, two – be consistently excellent in the performance of their duties, and three – be consistently dedicated to their official responsibilities over a period of years and continuous growth in responsibilities and skills within their profession, as provided by VFW national guidelines. Smith demonstrated excellence in all categories. Dave Caldwell, Post Commander presented the award, certificate, plaque and a monetary award to Smith at the meeting.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is the nation’s largest and most established major war veterans organization, with the local Post 4491 representing more than 80 members. Leading the Memorial Day Service at the Craig County Courthouse, “To honor the memory of those who courageously made the ultimate sacrifice for the noble cause of liberty and peace.” In coordination with the Town of New Castle and the Craig Valley Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), the annual event continues to demonstrate the honor and respect the community holds for its veterans.
