The Craig County School Board held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at the high school auditorium. Discussions ranged from student recognition and summer operations to policy updates and an ongoing board vacancy.
Student and staff recognitions highlight community talent
The meeting opened with a celebration of student success, including recognition of three student artists whose work will be displayed in the Craig County Courthouse. Honorees included Aubri Trivette (elementary), Silas Templetion (middle), and Dreydin Smith (high school), each selected to represent their school level in a civic arts partnership.
Summer work schedule approved
Under new business, the Board approved the summer work schedule for 12-month employees. Beginning the week of June 2 and running through the week of July 28, staff will follow a Monday-through-Thursday schedule, with eight-hour workdays. The change aims to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs during the summer period.
Board approves exam exemption policy
In a move likely to be welcomed by students, the Board approved a new exam exemption policy. The policy allows qualifying students to opt out of final exams based on their grades and attendance, rewarding consistency and strong academic performance.
Craig Creek Board seat remains vacant as candidates considered
The Board addressed the ongoing vacancy in the Craig Creek District, reviewing letters of interest from two candidates: H. Matheney and R. Senter. No appointment was made during the meeting, and Board members indicated that further discussion or candidate interviews may take place in the coming weeks.
Consent Agenda unanimously approved
The Board unanimously approved the consent agenda, which covered routine items including minutes, financial reports, payroll, and personnel updates. All items had been reviewed in advance.
Closed Session focuses on personnel and Superintendent search
The Board entered a closed session to discuss personnel matters and to continue the search for a new superintendent.
