Virginia Farrier Barger, 101, formerly of Buchanan, died Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Brandon Oaks in Roanoke.

She was born on December 3, 1923 in Sinking Creek, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband C.D. Barger, Jr.; her parents, Robert Ashby Farrier and Lena Folsom McCartney Farrier; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Virginia Farrier, Richard and Kitty Farrier; sisters and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Walton Mitchell, Jr., and Mary Lee Farrier.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and James Drummond of Charlotte, N.C.,; numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends.

Virginia graduated from Maywood High School in 1941. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1947 from Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University). She attended the University of Richmond for postgraduate work and was employed as a social worker in Roanoke. Later she joined her husband C.D. as they owned and operated the Clean Meat Market grocery store in Buchanan. Growing up in Sinking Creek, she attended the Old Bethel Methodist Church. Later, she was a member of the Buchanan Baptist Church, teaching numerous age groups. She and C.D. were actively involved with the Youth Department during their daughter’s high school years. Upon retirement, she and C.D. enjoyed traveling and spending time with family at the Farrier homeplace in Sinking Creek.

The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers at Brandon Oaks who cared for Virginia over these last few years and ensured she was happy, healthy and safe. The family received friends and relatives from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 23 at Botetourt Funeral Home with services at 2 p.m., followed by interment in Fairview Cemetery.
