Members of the Classic Car Club of America made Craig County a stop during their weeklong visit to the Roanoke area, bringing about 40 high-end, hand-built classic cars to New Castle and Paint Bank. Organizer Robert Barrows said many club members considered Thursday’s excursion the best day of the five-day visit, highlighting the winding drive over Caldwell Mountain and down Route 615.
In New Castle, club members shopped at the Emporium and visited buildings in the town’s historic district, while the Craig County Historical Society opened its properties and provided pastries and beverages at the Genealogy Library. The day’s itinerary also included stops at the Paint Bank State Fish Hatchery, Tinglers Mill and Paint Bank General Store.
About half of the group dined at the Swinging Bridge before continuing on to White Sulphur Springs. The club concluded its visit with a banquet at Hotel Roanoke featuring the theme “Railroads of the ’30s and ’40s,” with history, period decor and vintage costumes adding to the evening.
