The Craig County Board of Supervisors postponed action Aug. 6 on a proposed compensation plan and salary classification guidelines developed through a study by Virginia Tech.
The county previously hired Virginia Tech to conduct a comparative study of county employee salaries and local government offices in the surrounding area. Virginia Tech presented a plan and guidelines to the board in July.
The proposed guidelines would be used as a reference in the hiring process, with the understanding that they could be amended as needed.
During the Aug. 6 meeting, Board Chair Jesse Spence asked for a motion regarding Resolution R26-64, which would approve the classifications and compensation plan guidelines.
Clerk to the Board Dan Collins requested that the compensation plan guidelines be used when advertising positions, including listing a minimum, midrange and maximum salary to help ensure compensation is fair and competitive.
Supervisor Brian Lipes requested clarification that the guidelines were intended for hiring purposes and would not be used to increase the salaries of existing employees. He also expressed concern that changes could create salary compression issues.
Spence said he supported using the guidelines for hiring but shared concerns about making adjustments to current employee salaries.
Supervisor Jordan Labiosa said adopting the guidelines would be the same as adopting the plan presented to the board.
Following the discussion, Spence asked for a motion to adopt or postpone the resolution. Supervisor Carl Bailey made a motion to postpone action on the resolution, with Lipes seconding.
The motion to postpone passed unanimously, with Bailey, Lipes, Labiosa, Raymond Christian and Spence voting in favor.
