The Craig County girls will play their Pioneer District volleyball opener on Thursday of this week when the Rockets go to Narrows. Craig was scheduled to host North Cross on Tuesday.
The Rockets are 0-2 after dropping a four-set match to Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy at the lake last week. The Rockets lost the first two sets by close scores, 25-21 and 25-22, then won the third set, 25-17. The Ospreys then put it away with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
“It was a competitive match,” said Craig coach Suzanne Crawford. “We still have a few things to work on, but the team’s attitude and determination to improve are really showing. The girls are putting in great effort, and I am very proud of them.”
Ally Calfee led the offense with six kills and three aces. Anika Zimmerman had a great game, contributing four kills and an ace, while Holley Givens and Annalese Zimmerman added four kills each.
Laikan May and Calfee had strong defensive performances, with Laikan recording 15 digs and Ally contributing 12 digs and seven blocks. Annalese Zimmerman, Addisyn Higgins, and Givens also played solid defense with eight digs each. Natalie Fisher had some amazing sets, finishing with 24 assists while also being active at the net.
The Rockets had a home match scheduled for last Thursday with Liberty but that was canceled due to issues with the heating and cooling system in the Craig County gym.
