The Craig County School Board held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, March 10, at the Craig County High School auditorium, where members discussed the upcoming school budget, recognized student achievements and considered several policy matters.
Because The New Castle Record’s press deadline falls on Tuesdays, coverage of the meeting could not be included in this week’s edition. A full report on the meeting will appear in next week’s issue.
One of the central items on the agenda was a public hearing on the proposed 2026-27 school budget. During the hearing, residents had the opportunity to comment on the proposed spending plan. Speakers were limited to three minutes, and the board did not respond to comments during the hearing.
The meeting also included several recognitions. Among them was Raelynn Stamper, who placed third in the microbiology division at the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School Project Forum for her project examining the effects of antibiotics and turmeric on Pseudomonas fluorescens. Additional recognitions included the school division’s employee of the month and students participating in the Virginia Tech Art Show and the Alexander Black House Art Show.
Superintendent’s Report also appeared on the agenda to provide updates on school division operations.
Under new business, the board was scheduled to consider several items, including action related to the division’s Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee and approval of a policy services agreement with the Virginia School Boards Association. Board members were also slated to review the first reading of the February 2026 VSBA policy updates and discuss Policy BDD, which addresses electronic participation in school board meetings from remote locations.
Other agenda items included the hearing of citizens and delegations, approval of the consent agenda — including minutes, payroll, warrants and financial reports — and a closed session as permitted under the Code of Virginia.
The meeting concluded with board comments and information items before adjournment.
