Craig County High School is asking families to help students develop healthy digital habits by monitoring their Chromebook use outside of school hours.
In a letter sent to middle school families on Sept. 17, Principal Susan Shea Stimeling said the division has noticed an increase in non-academic use of Chromebooks after school, such as gaming, social media, email chatting and video streaming. She said those activities can interfere with students’ sleep, focus and overall well-being.
“While CCPS has software to filter online activity for students, at times, unsupervised online activity may expose students to inappropriate content or interactions,” Stimeling wrote.
The letter encouraged families to set clear expectations for when and how Chromebooks should be used at home. Suggestions included completing homework before using the device for other purposes, creating screen-free times during meals and before bedtime, and reviewing browser history and online activity.
Stimeling also reminded families that school-issued Chromebooks are intended for educational purposes.
“Our goal is to support our students in becoming responsible digital citizens,” she said. “Your involvement at home makes a significant difference, and we appreciate your continued support.”
Families with questions or in need of assistance with monitoring tools or parental controls were encouraged to reach out to the school.
