Bad luck usually comes in threes but it came in twos last week at the Craig County Middle School.
A water leak that forced school officials to move middle school students in with elementary schoolers last week turned out to be the result of not one but two problems.
Dr. Rose Martin, superintendent of Craig County Schools, said the water leak was caused with the cold air exchange switch, which lets fresh air into the building, stopped working and was stuck in the open position.
Normally this would trigger a fail safe that would stop the cold air from entering the school, but apparently this failed as well, Dr. Martin said.
This allowed the temperature in the school to drop and the coils seized and then broke, flooding the school.
Repairs were very quick and the students were able to return to school Wednesday.
Southern Air officials replaced the coils and control panels Monday.
Dr. Martin said she believes this was just an isolated incident and not part of the series of problems the middle school has faced since opening last year.
Damages were also thought to be minor, as teachers examined their rooms, Dr. Martin said.
Floor tiles and a copy machine were still drying out Monday.
