Jordan Persinger, a 2012 graduate of Craig County High School, is the new head volleyball coach at William Byrd High School in Vinton. The Terriers are a Class 3 team in the tough Blue Ridge District.
“I’m very excited for her,” said Craig County High teacher Geoff Boyer, who coached Jordan in high school. “She was a leader. I told Pam(wife) that Jordan would be a great coach and it is no surprise that she has continued her education into administration.”
Persinger was on the Craig region semifinal team in 2011.
“Her stats as a middle hitter may not have jumped off the page, but she made her team play their best every match,” said Boyer. “She knew when to be silly and when to be serious, always aware of what her teammates needed to be successful.”
After playing for the Rockets Jordan received her bachelors’ degree from Hollins University and her masters’ in school administration from Radford University. She played volleyball all four years at Hollins.
Persinger started her coaching career in 2018 as an assistant at William Byrd Middle School. She spent a year as an assistant varsity coach under Allison Thornton before taking the head middle school job in 2020. She was the head middle school coach in 2021 and 2022 before taking over the role as Head JV Coach in 2023, where she’s been the last two years.
“We were fortunate to have Jordan step in as our JV coach two years ago, and she has made an immediate and lasting impact,” said Thornton. “Jordan’s dedication to skill development, her commitment to fostering teamwork, and her ability to instill a deep sense of pride in our program have been nothing short of inspiring. Her own experience as both a high school and college athlete brings an invaluable perspective—showing our players firsthand the possibilities that volleyball can open up for them.”
