Jason A. Wheeler has been named the new superintendent of Craig County Public Schools, marking a return to the district where he began his career in education.
In a letter to the community dated July 7, Wheeler expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the leadership role and shared his excitement about rejoining a school system he called “wonderful” and personally meaningful.
“My career began right here in CCPS as a middle school social studies teacher,” Wheeler wrote. “I was fortunate to work with and be shaped by amazing staff members as well as the external Craig County community.”
Wheeler’s experience within the district includes a variety of administrative roles, including middle school coordinator for the high school, testing coordinator at both elementary and secondary levels, and assistant principal at all grade levels. He also served as co-principal and principal of the PreK-7 elementary school. Most recently, he worked as director of human resources and teacher development.
Throughout his career, Wheeler said he has focused on building meaningful relationships and working collaboratively with staff, students, families, and the broader community.
“I genuinely believe that my role is to support all CCPS students, employees, families, and external stakeholders so that we all can work collaboratively to instill a love of learning within our students,” he wrote.
Wheeler is married and has three children, ages 7, 9 and 12. His wife, also an educator, began her career in Craig County Public Schools as a paraprofessional before becoming a social studies and alternative education teacher.
Wheeler said he looks forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new members of the school community.
“Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of service,” he wrote.
