Saturday, June 14 marked the 250th anniversary of the formation of the United States Army. A resolution signed by Continental Congress led to a military force which immediately began the eight-year struggle to win independence for our new country. It is estimated that over 41 million citizens have served in the Army, which has played a vital role in the growth and development of the nation.
June 14 is also Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the American flag by Continental Congress in 1777.
To mark the occasion, Craig Valley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution placed 250 U.S. flags at the entrance of the County Courthouse on Main Street in New Castle. They added a large “Happy Birthday U. S. Army” sign and “250” silver helium balloons. Due to multiple rainstorms throughout the day, the balloons were removed earlier than planned.
The flags will be recycled and distributed during the upcoming Independence Day Parade at 10 a.m. on July 4.
