The Craig County baseball and softball teams will be home on Thursday to host Parry McCluer in Pioneer District action. Both games are scheduled to start at 5 pm in New Castle.

The boys were looking for their first win on Monday of this week when they played host to Class 3 Staunton River, a strong Blue Ridge District team. The Rockets dropped two games last week to fall to 0-9 on the season, falling to Eastern Montgomery in Elliston, 20-6, and Highland County in Monterey, 19-4.

The girls had just one game last week, falling 14-4 at Eastern Montgomery. The loss dropped the Rockets to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in Pioneer District games.

Craig’s girls took the early lead at East Mont, scoring three runs in the first inning. However, the Mustangs rallied with a big fifth inning and went on to win.

“We started strong and I think we just got over eager at the plate,” said Craig coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “East Mont played better defense. Our own defense continues to be inconsistent, but we are doing a much better job of getting the bat on the ball this season so I’m happy to be building on that.”

The girls were scheduled to play at Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy on Monday but results were too late for publication.
