The Craig County girls fell behind early and never could catch up despite putting eight runs on the board in a softball loss to Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy last week. The visiting Ospreys took a 19-8 win in New Castle.
SMLCA scored six runs in the top of the first before the Rockets had a chance to bat. It was 13-0 after two and a half innings. At that point the Craig offense started to click with three in the third and five runs in the fourth but the deficit was too large to make up.
Craig had six hits, one each by Kallie Fisher, Daileigh Donithan, Jenna Boitnotte, Layla Dooley, Aleah Owens and Annalese Zimmerman. Fisher and Boitnotte scored two runs each and Donithan knocked in a pair with a double.
Zimmerman started on the mound for Craig and struck out five but walked six. Boitnotte pitched one inning and allowed one hit. The Ospreys had 13 hits.
“They just had a really strong pitcher,” said Craig coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “We struggled with walks and errors in the field.”
The loss dropped Craig to 1-3 on the season and Thursday’s game with Parry McCluer was rained out. Craig has two home games this week, on Tuesday against Narrows and Thursday against Giles, followed by a trip to Eastern Montgomery next Tuesday.
