Craig County School Board tackles key issues at November meeting Kristina Wyatt-Evans Contributing writer The Craig County School Board held its regular monthly meeting on Nov. 12 at the Craig County High School Auditorium. The meeting kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. First up, the board approved the agenda and then took time to recognize some outstanding students who earned industry certifications, Next, citizens from the community had their say, with several emphasizing the need for more funding to support school programs. Superintendent Dwayne Huff then gave his report, highlighting the district’s recent wins like higher test scores, but also touching on challenges such as the teacher shortage. The board then moved on to new business. They approved employee leave incentives and a pay increase for bus drivers who undertake special trips. The board also discussed graduation requirements. They reviewed the requirements for both the standard diploma and the advanced diploma. The board then approved the consent agenda. This included the minutes of the previous meeting, warrants, payroll, financial reports and the personnel list. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel matters. The meeting was adjourned after the closed session. In addition to the above, the board also discussed the following items: ● The need for more parent involvement in schools ● The importance of providing students with a well-rounded education ● The need to address the achievement gap ● The importance of school safety The board is committed to providing the best possible education for all students in Craig County.
