While communities across the nation prepare to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, members of Forks of John’s Creek Christian Church recently celebrated a milestone of their own.

The congregation observed the church’s 171st anniversary June 7, commemorating its founding in June 1855 and its longstanding role in serving the spiritual needs of the John’s Creek community in Craig County.

The annual Homecoming Anniversary service featured a message from Chris Harrah and special music by Dianna and Jimmy McDaniel. Following the worship service, members gathered for a Homecoming fellowship meal in the church’s fellowship hall.

As part of the celebration, the congregation showcased more than 150 antique and vintage items contributed by church members. The display highlighted the traditions, culture and craftsmanship of generations of church families.

Among the items exhibited were a handmade quilt more than 100 years old, several century-old crocks and hand butter churns, three dolls dating back about 80 years, a cast-iron toy cook stove set estimated to be 70 years old and a 60-year-old copy of Dale Evans Favorite Bible Stories. Other artifacts included antique rolling pins, glazed bean pots, knitted afghans, quilts, crocheted tablecloths, toys and kitchen tools.

Church members said the collection reflected both the heritage of the congregation and the traditions of rural Virginia that have been passed down through generations.

The anniversary celebration was one part of a broader observance of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Beginning March 22, the congregation launched a three-month series of patriotic-themed services and activities tied to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The effort coincided with the 251st anniversary of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, delivered March 23, 1775.

Since March, worship services have featured patriotic bulletins, historical information about hymns and educational materials focused on the nation’s founding. Congregants learned about the history of hymns such as “O Worship the King” and “Come Thou Almighty King,” including their connections to the colonial era and expressions of faith during the struggle for independence.

Ahead of the anniversary of D-Day, the church sang “In Times Like These,” a hymn written in 1944 by Ruth Caye Jones after reading newspaper reports detailing mounting World War II casualties. For Memorial Day, attendees received enamel poppy lapel pins bearing the inscription “Lest We Forget” as well as packets of poppy seeds to plant in remembrance of fallen service members.

Church families also received patriotic garden flags and flag stands as part of the congregation’s ongoing America 250 observance.

The celebration will conclude with a Patriotic Picnic scheduled for June 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Donald and Betty Caldwell Picnic Shelter on the church grounds. The potluck event will serve as a lead-up to Independence Day celebrations.

Church leaders said the anniversaries of both the nation and the congregation provide opportunities to reflect on the faith, heritage and traditions that have shaped their communities over generations.

Forks of John’s Creek Christian Church holds Sunday worship services at 10 a.m. and welcomes visitors to attend services and special events throughout the year.
