The beautiful land that surrounds us has been a magnet to many just passing by. Some pause for a brief visit, others set down roots and call it home. The ones that stay are the lucky ones. They are given the opportunity to experience more of what these rich soils have to offer. They raise their families off the bounty that surrounds them, build bonds among neighbors and find their place with a measure of hard work and rest.
It is hard to imagine the stories of the many that came before us. They leave behind small reminders of who they were. We discover arrowheads close to cool springs, rusted workhorse shoes on forested mountain slopes and hand-hewn logs under layers of change.
In town, the Courthouse, Brick Hotel, banks and Victorian homes are a few of the reminders of others who also, chose to stay. These folks passed through but stayed long enough to bond with neighbors and leave reminders of their hard work taking root. We are grateful.
Today, do we have an opportunity to make our mark? Could a gathering place in New Castle provide a place to pause and share what we have to offer? Set aside your busy life for just one night. Join the conversation at the Courthouse, Thursday, May 3, at 6:00 p.m., to see what the proposal for a Community Center/Library looks like. Let’s sit down together and shape what we would like to leave behind.
Can we build a gathering place to welcome those just passing through or those who might just want to stay?
See you at the County Board Meeting, Craig County Courthouse, Thursday, May 3, at 6:00 p.m.
