The Craig County girls played their first softball games of the season last week, a month after the spring sports season began. The Rockets were continually postponed to that point due to bad weather.
The girls finally got a nice day, and a dry field, when they played host to Parry McCluer in New Castle last Thursday. The visiting Blues took a 10-6 win to spoil the home opener for the Rockets.
“We hit the ball pretty well but gave up too many runs,” said Craig coach Elaina Wolfe-Carper, who was coaching her first game as varsity head coach.
Keiley Dudding had two hits for the Rockets. Kaylee Pauley and Maggie Huffman split time on the mound.
A day later, Huffman pitched a complete game as the Rockets bounced back with a 9-5 win at Christiansburg. Most of the girls on the team had hits as the Rockets even their record at 1-1.
Craig was scheduled to play at Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. That’s the only game this week, and next Monday they go to James Monroe for a doubleheader.
