The Craig County girls’ basketball team will be road Warriors this week as they play back-to-back games on the road Thursday and Friday. Craig will be at Parry McCluer on Thursday and at Bath County on Friday.
“Hopefully we can start a nice win streak,” said Craig coach Randy Hale.
The Blues will be a challenge. Parry McCluer is 13-2 after losing to a powerhouse Group 3A Lord Botetourt team last Saturday. Craig is now 5-9 after three losses last week, at times playing with just seven girls for one reason or another. The Rockets lost to Narrows on Wednesday, then lost back-to-back games to Covington on Friday at home and Saturday at Covington.
At Narrows the Rockets lost 63-60 in a game they could have won. The Rockets struggled in the first half before making a run after intermission, only to come up short.
“We played good in the second half and had a chance to win,” said Hale. “We played better than we’d been playing.”
Tierrney Zysk led the Rockets with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Taylor Sloss had 11 points and eight boards. Kaylee Pauley had five assists.
On Saturday at home the Rockets fell to Covington, 71-61. Zysk had 23 points and 13 rebounds in this one. Pauley had 14 points and Autumn Hutchison had 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive board.
The Rockets returned the trip to Covington Saturday and came closer but still came up on the short end of the score, 57-52. Zysk had 24 points and 19 rebounds and Jaci McAlwee also had a double-double with 12 points and a dozen boards. Alexus Jones had eight rebounds and six assists.
Next week the Rockets will begin the week with back-to-back Pioneer District games. They’re at Eastern Montgomery on Monday and home to Bath County on Tuesday, February 6.
