The Craig County girls picked up a volleyball win last week when they defeated Highland County in three sets. The Rockets won 25-12, 25-8 and 25-14 in New Castle.
“This was a great game with effective team communication throughout,” said coach Suzanne Crawford. “Annika Zimmerman had some big blocks at the net and did an amazing job attacking on offense. Holley Givens played well and was very impressive on defense, and Natalie Fisher had a great all-around game.”
Annika had six kills and three blocks for the Rockets while Natalie served up three aces and had 10 digs. Annalese Zimmerman had five kills and a pair of aces, Addisyn Higgens and Ally Calfee had three kills each and Holley Givens had an ace, two kills and 10 digs.
On Thursday the Rockets were off to Rocky Gap for their third match in as many nights and they lost to host Bland County in three sets, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-11.
“This was a tough loss coming off such a great game the day before,” said Crawford. “We missed a lot of blocks and didn’t manage to record a successful block across all three sets, which forced the defense to work especially hard. Holley and Laikan did a great job in the back row, and Natalie had a strong game attacking at the net alongside her 15 assists.”
Annika Zimmerman had five kills to lead the Rockets, and also served up a couple aces. Annalese had two kills and two aces, Higgens had three kills while Givens and Fisher had two each. May had 10 digs and Mia Beller had six.
The Rockets come into the week at 2-13 and they were scheduled to host Bath County on Monday. On Thursday they’re in Buena Vista to play Parry McCluer and next Tuesday, Oct. 20, Eastern Montgomery comes here.
