The Craig County volleyball team opened the season last week with matches at Liberty High and at home against Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy. This week the sites will be reversed as the Rockets will travel to the lake to play the Ospreys on Tuesday then host Liberty on Thursday in New Castle.
The Rockets opened with a 3-0 loss to Liberty last week. Then, on Thursday, Craig and Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy split the first two sets in New Castle before the Ospreys prevailed, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18 and 25-22.
“This was a great opener for our first home game,” said Craig coach Suzanne Crawford. “Even though we didn’t pull out the win, the girls played amazingly and battled through all four sets.”
Annika Zimmerman had five kills to lead the Rockets and also had three blocks. Ally Calfee had three kills, a couple blocks and three serving aces.
Holley Givens had three kills and three aces, Natalie Fisher had 14 assists, a pair of aces and three digs, Laikan May had three aces and eight digs and Addisyn Higgins had four kills and played a strong defensive game.
“If we continue to play like this we will see great things from the volleyball program,” said Crawford.
