Craig County waited eight years for the school to play in a high school golf match, so another week isn’t going to hurt. The Rockets were rained out of their scheduled opening match against Eastern Montgomery at the Blacksburg Municipal course last week. The match has been rescheduled for “The Hill” on Wednesday, September 2.

With the rainout the first official match of the season is now scheduled for today, August 12, at the Homestead course against Bath County. In the meantime, the Rockets played a practice round at Hanging Rock last week and two of the Craig golfers played a round with former coach Fred Moler at the Fountain Springs course in Peterstown, West Virginia.

Moler was the coach the last time the Rockets competed in high school golf eight years ago. His son Noah was a senior and standout player on that team, advancing to the state tournament as an individual. Noah went on to play at Bluefield College and is now living in Montgomery County and working at Virginia Tech.

Fred has been teaching in Myrtle Beach for the past three years but he recently moved back to Virginia and is retired and living in Dublin.

“He said he’d be happy to help out if needed,” said current coach Geoff Boyer.

Geoff and his twin sons, Ryan and Thomas, caught up with Fred and played a round with him last weekend at Fountain Springs. The foursome played nine holes before rain interrupted their match. Thomas led the group with a 40 followed by Geoff at 41, Moler at 42 and Ryan Boyer at 49.

“It was a memorable round because it was the first time Thomas beat me,” said Geoff.
