Jane Craig Looney Cole, 78, of New Castle, Virginia, passed away the evening of July 28, 2026. Jane was born on December 12, 1947, in Looney, VA, on the family farm in Craig County, Virginia. Jane graduated from Loudoun County High School in 1966.
While Jane held many positions over her lifetime, ranging from various part-time positions in New Castle to a position at Friendship Manor where her grandmother resided, she was a loving mother first to her two children, Sonny and Suzy. Jane’s final position was as a clerk in the Purchasing Department of Virginia Tech. After Jane retired from Virginia Tech, she served on the New Castle Town Council.
Jane had a heartfelt compassion for animals, and no stray went unloved or unfed. She also had a love for charities, always giving to various causes to help those in need.
Jane loved to bake delicious cakes and pies for the purpose of selling them, but it always seemed that she gave them away for free because of her kind, generous nature. Jane was a proud Hokie, red-blooded American, and follower of God with the Chestnut Grove Church.
Remaining to cherish Jane’s memory are her children, Roy “Sonny” L. Cole, Jr. (Alethia) and Suzy Cole Dyndur (Shane); grandchildren, Olivia Danielle Cole-Johnson (Trevor) and Savannah Landes; and great-grandchildren, Serana Johnson and Sullivan Johnson.
Preceding Jane in death are her grandparents, Mary Grace Looney and Charles R. Looney; her mother, Virginia Anne L. Scott, and stepfather, Garland Scott; her brother, Charles “Butch” A. Looney; her uncle, Charles R. Looney Jr.; her aunt, Charlene L. Honts; and her beloved companion, Jack Oliver.
Jane’s commemoration will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Grove Church, 20587 Cumberland Gap Road, New Castle, VA 24127. Officiating the service will be Jim Looney. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
