Four District Court judges have appointed Peggy Elmore as Clerk of Circuit Court for Craig County, replacing recently retired Walton Mitchell, Jr.
Elmore served the county alongside Mitchell as Deputy Clerk for 14 years before being appointed Clerk in the new year. She plans to run for Clerk of Circuit Court when special elections are held in November.
“Everybody thought he ran a good office,” Elmore said.
Elmore said the workload is up since the county is growing, but she is receiving help from Sherry Elmore, who acted as a part-time deputy clerk before Mitchell retired. Peggy’s former position of Deputy Clerk II has not yet been filled.
Running the Clerk’s office is a big responsibility, Elmore said, but Mitchel made sure she was trained to handle all the responsibilities of the position. She has already acted a Clerkin a jury trial in civil court, which she said ran smoothly.
