The fourth and final ball field of Craig County’s “Field of Dreams” was recently completed and dedicated in a ceremony in New Castle last Saturday morning. The idea of the complex was started in 2007 with a grant for $90,000 and another $90,000 to be raised locally by Craig County residents. Much volunteer work was put into the complex, which includes a football-soccer field, a playground, concession stand and restrooms in addition to four ballfields.
The full-sized football-soccer field is the first in the county specifically for recreation. Debbie Snead, who played a role in making the complex possible working for Virginia Tech’s Cooperative Extension, threw out the first ball next to Teresa Oliver, who was also involved as CCR&CA President. Craig sports director Sherri Deck hosted the ceremony and introduced some celebrities before the kids posed for a group photo on Field 4. The complex was buzzing with action all day, as will often be the case now that this fantastic complex has been completed.
