The Craig County School Board recognized student Clayton Cassell during its April 14 regular meeting as the inaugural recipient of the Clayton Cassell Perseverance Award.

The award, recently renamed in Cassell’s honor, was created to recognize perseverance and determination. Cassell is the first student to receive the distinction.

During the meeting, Craig County Public Schools staff member Mr. Fisher emphasized the significance of the recognition, noting that having an award named after a student is a rare honor that will continue long into the future. He said the recognition stands out among many accomplishments and reflects the lasting impact Cassell has made.

Fisher also highlighted the personal lessons he has taken from working with Cassell, explaining that while coaches often aim to teach life skills, Cassell has demonstrated the importance of overcoming everyday challenges through his own example.

School officials noted that Cassell was previously recognized by WSLS, which featured him in a special segment during the summer.

Board members also reflected on Cassell’s growth, recalling knowing him as a young child and describing his development into a hardworking and inspiring young man whose actions positively influence those around him.

Cassell was presented with the award during the meeting and posed for a photo with school officials.
