Residents and visitors will have an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of Craig County’s night skies during a community star party sponsored by Preserve Craig Inc. and the Town of New Castle.

The event is scheduled for Friday, April 17, weather permitting, with Friday, April 24 designated as a rain date. Activities will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Field of Dreams in New Castle.

The evening will feature star gazing, telescope observing, demonstrations of the Library Telescope, a guided tour of the night sky and educational information about the importance and value of preserving dark skies. Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring a chair or blanket, binoculars of any size and a red flashlight for the best viewing experience.

The community event also will highlight why the Town of New Castle is exploring the possibility of becoming a certified Dark Sky Community, a designation that recognizes efforts to protect natural nighttime environments from light pollution.

Field of Dreams, home of the Craig County Recreational Conservation Association, is located just east of New Castle on Route 615 at 270 Old Railroad Ave. Old Railroad Avenue is on the right, and the field is visible from Route 615.
