A special election will be held Tuesday, April 21, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early voting began March 6 and will continue through April 18 at the Craig County Voter Registration Office, 155 Main St., New Castle. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office will also be open for in-person early voting on Saturday, April 11, and Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. April 10. Voter registration closes at 5 p.m. April 14.

On Election Day, all precincts will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and each location, as well as the registrar’s office, will have an absentee ballot drop-off station available.

Sample ballots are available at the registrar’s office and online at the county’s election website.

Voters will be asked to consider a proposed constitutional amendment related to congressional redistricting.

Under current law, Virginia’s 11 congressional districts are drawn once every 10 years by the Virginia Redistricting Commission, with the next redistricting scheduled for 2031.

The proposed amendment would allow the General Assembly to redraw one or more congressional districts before 2031 under limited circumstances. Specifically, lawmakers could act if another state redraws its districts outside of the normal decennial process and not under court order. That authority would remain in effect through Oct. 31, 2030, after which responsibility would return to the commission.

If approved, the amendment would also enact a new district map in time for the 2026 congressional elections.

A “yes” vote would grant the General Assembly temporary authority to redraw districts and implement the proposed map. A “no” vote would keep the current system in place, leaving redistricting authority with the commission and maintaining existing district boundaries.

For more information, contact the Craig County General Registrar’s Office at 540-864-6190 or email vote@craigcountyva.gov.
