The Craig County Rockets opened the softball season last week and drew a tough opponent for their opening games. The Rockets dropped two games to Class 3 Staunton River of the Blue Ridge District, a traditionally tough team.
After getting rained out last Monday the Rockets opened at home against Staunton River on Wednesday and lost 15-0. A day later they made up the rained out game in Moneta and were shut out again, 12-0. Kallie Fisher had Craig’s only hit in the first two games.
“While they were tough games, they were a very good learning experience for us,” said Craig coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “We struggled as a team to catch up to their pitchers’ speed. Kammie Fisher, our starting pitcher, is looking stronger with each game. Playing stronger overall that second game is an encouraging sign for the rest of the season.”
The Rockets are off this week for spring break. They’ll return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31, to host Narrows.
