Craig’s Daileigh Donithan is on the move at a recent game.

The Craig County girls will be home and the boys will most likely be on the road when the Pioneer District basketball tournament opens at home sites on Friday. Final standings and first round opponents were yet to be determined as teams play busy schedules this week to make up for two weeks of postponements due to the weather.

The Craig girls have clinched a home tournament opener with a 4-4 district record coming into the week. The girls defeated Highland County in Monterey last week, 62-42, to even their Pioneer record and improve to 6-5 overall. The girls opened this week with two road games, at Bath County Monday and at Parry McCluer Tuesday, and tonight they’re on the road again with a 5:30 pm game against Eastern Montgomery in Elliston.

The Craig boys lost to Highland in last week’s doubleheader, 62-36. The Rockets beat the Rams in a prior game in New Castle but Craig is without three players who are currently serving suspensions. Tristan Dooley led Craig with 16 points and Marcus Donithan had a dozen as the Rockets fell to 2-5 in the district and 4-9 overall.

The boys also have a busy week as they make up previously postponed games. They were at Bath for a doubleheader with the girls on Monday and home to Parry McCluer Tuesday. Today the boys’ jayvees will open a tripleheader at East Mont at 4 pm. The girls’ varsity game will follow and the boys will wrap up the tripleheader at approximately 7 pm.

Games originally scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled. Both were non-district, with the girls playing North Cross and the boys at the Covington Boys Home.
