Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation briefed the Craig County Board of Supervisors Oct. 2 on upcoming roadway work, signage reviews and progress on local trail and conservation initiatives.
VDOT’s Brian Blevins reported no new land development permits over the past month but noted ongoing ditching, mowing and patching work on Routes 42, 311, 621, 631 and 642. He said a request for curve warning signs on Route 42 is still under review and could take several weeks.
Supervisors asked about the bridge on Route 621, truck-related blockages on sharp curves along Route 42, and repainting the crosswalk near the Commons.
Woody Lipps provided additional updates on trail development, including a trailhead property recently donated to VDOT under a conservation easement. He said 304 public comments were submitted during this summer’s design hearings for the greenway project, with 190 generally in favor.
Lipps also raised concerns about illegal dumping near the McCartney Cemetery access gate, which has now been locked to prevent repeated violations.
