Organization honors students for academic achievement

By:  Nicky Ledford

From the October 17, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record

Academics, leadership, service—what do all these things add up to? The Beta Club.

The Craig County High School chapter of the Beta Club recently inducted 15 new members in a tap ceremony.

The tap in is when current members of the club approach students and signify their selection in to the society by tapping with them with a baton. The tap n ceremony was Wednesday, Oct 19.

Juniors must have a 3.0 or better grade point average. Juniors Joshua Evans, Mandy McGuire, Kelly Tyzinski, Katie Williams and Crystal Robinson were inducted.

The sophomores who were tapped had to have at least a 3.5 GPA.  They were: Courtney Bradley, Annie Brown, Bonnie Hart, Kelly Robinson, Nicky Ledford, Emily Lester, Roxanne Osborne, Andrea Reynolds, Chris Walker and “Woody” Woodall.

The officers for the Beta Club are: Heather Caldwell, president; Jessica Huffman, vice president; Lindsey Mattox, secretary; Liz Brammer, treasurer; and Angie Cash, representative.

The Sponsors are Kim Hendrick and Jacqueline Cantley.

The Beta Club is a national organization which emphasizes not only academic skills, but leadership, character, and service.  The national colors are black and gold. The black signifies dignity, seriousness and restraint, while the gold stands for warmth, friendship, and faithfulness.

The statewide Beta Club convention will be held in Roanoke. In June, the national convention will be in Orlando. Beta sponsors hope to raise enough money to go to the national conference and have a successful year with the new and old members.
