INTERSTATE 81
(Updated Oct. 17, 2025) – Bridge Work at Exit 156, Botetourt County:
Bridge work is underway on northbound and southbound I-81 at Exit 156. Milling and paving the bridge deck will take place first on the northbound side, followed by the southbound side. Drivers can expect nighttime lane closures and periodic slow-roll operations. Flagging will occur during barrier wall placement on Route 640 (Brughs Mill Road). Expected completion is fall 2026.
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Acceleration Ramp Extensions, Pulaski and Montgomery Counties:
Work continues to extend acceleration lanes on I-81 at mile markers 94 (southbound) and 105 (northbound). The Exit 94 entrance ramp onto southbound I-81 is open. The Route 232 entrance ramp onto northbound I-81 at mile marker 105 will be closed from 8 p.m. Oct. 16 through 7 a.m. Oct. 30. Drivers should use Rock Road and Tyler Avenue to access I-81 northbound at Exit 109.
Nighttime lane closures are in place Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Shoulder closures and narrowed or shifted ramps are possible. Completion is scheduled for summer 2026.
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Exit 89 Bridge Rehabilitation, Pulaski County:
A bridge project is underway at Exit 89. Ramp and lane closures are possible. The Exit 89B on-ramp from Draper Valley Road to northbound I-81 and the off-ramp from northbound I-81 to Draper Valley Road are closed. A signed detour directs traffic to Exit 94.
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Lane Widening, Exits 137–141:
A $179 million project is underway to widen I-81 between mile markers 136.6 and 141.8 in Roanoke County and Salem. Two lanes remain open in each direction, with alternating lane and shoulder closures possible from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.
Ramp closures at Exit 140 and flagging on Routes 635 and 619 are possible. Uneven pavement, narrow ramps, and traffic shifts are expected. The project includes bridge replacements, sound barriers, lighting upgrades and is expected to finish in early 2026.

Survey and preparation work are underway. Nighttime lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. are possible, and barrier wall installation will begin later this fall. Expected completion is summer 2031.
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Deck Overlay at Peak Creek, Mile Marker 95.7:
Repair work continues on the I-81 bridges over Peak Creek. Alternating nighttime lane closures are in place between mile markers 94 and 97 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Completion is expected in fall 2025.
(Updated Sept. 12, 2025) – New River Bridge Replacement, Exit 105:
Northbound traffic has been switched onto the newly constructed bridge over the New River at the Montgomery/Pulaski County line. Lane closures may occur from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and shoulder closures are in place throughout the project. Slow-roll operations may be used for structural deliveries between mile markers 98 and 109. Speed limit is reduced to 60 mph.
(Updated Oct. 17, 2025) – Bridge Deck Repairs, Mile Markers 170–89:
Bridge deck patching continues between mile markers 160 and 164 in Botetourt County. Nighttime lane closures are in place northbound and southbound from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Delays are possible.
ROANOKE CITY
(Updated Oct. 17, 2025) – Orange Avenue Off-Ramp Safety Improvements:
Shoulder closures and nighttime lane closures are in place on Route 460 (Orange Avenue) between Burrell Street and Williamson Road. New signal installation is underway. Delays are possible.
ROANOKE COUNTY
(Updated Oct. 10, 2025) – Route 220/Route 419 Diverging Diamond Interchange:
Construction continues on the reconfiguration of the Route 220/Route 419 interchange into a diverging diamond. Work includes intersection improvements along both routes. Completion is expected in fall 2028.
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Route 220 at Crossbow Circle and Pheasant Ridge Road:
Construction is underway with new traffic patterns requiring drivers to turn left or right to make U-turns instead of crossing Route 220.
(Updated Oct. 10, 2025) – Route 220 at Southern Hills and Valley Avenue:
Nighttime lane closures are in place Sunday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. A new traffic pattern is in place using U-turns instead of direct crossings.
BOTETOURT COUNTY
(New Oct. 23, 2025) – Alternate 220 and Crumpacker Road Traffic Change:
A new left-turn yield-on-green signal is active at the intersection of Alternate Route 220 and Crumpacker Road. Drivers should use caution adapting to the change.
(Updated Aug. 8, 2025) – Route 621 (Roaring Run Road):
The road is reduced to one lane with a temporary signal near 618 Roaring Run Road for culvert replacement. Delays are possible. Completion is expected fall 2025.

Brush cutting and stabilization work continues along the former C&O railbed. Design plans are being refined, and no construction schedule has been set.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
(Updated Oct. 24, 2025) – Route 460 Business Pedestrian Improvements:
Work is underway between Laurel Street (Walmart entrance) and Spradlin Farm Drive. Lane closures are possible from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Expected completion is summer 2026.
(Updated Oct. 17, 2025) – Route 8 Park and Ride Project:
Construction continues near I-81 Exit 114. Alternating lane closures, shoulder closures and flagging are in place on Route 8 and Route 666 (Mud Pike Road). Completion is expected winter 2027.
