The Craig County girls will be heading to Monterey Thursday for a Pioneer District volleyball match against Highland County. The Rams come into the week at 3-3 but they’re yet to win a district match.
The Rockets are 2-9 overall coming into the week and also looking for their first district win. Last week Craig dropped Pioneer matches to Parry McCluer, at home, and at Bath County.
Against Parry McCluer the visiting Blues took a three-set win, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19. Emily Smith led Craig with three kills, five blocks and 15 digs. Cheyanne Bell had two kills and three blocks, Annalese Zimmerman had two kills and 13 digs and Jenna Boitnotte had a pair of aces and five assists.
Last Thursday in Bath the Rockets lost to the host to the host Chargers 25-19, 25-13 and 25-20. Bell and Smith had three kills each and Emily had 20 digs in this one while Cheyanne had four blocks. Zimmerman had five kills and Makenzie Lucas had three aces. Natalie Fisher had a strong all-around game as well.
“Both district games last were tough to lose,” said coach Suzanne Crawford. “However, with each game the girls are improving. Passing and blocking have been our main focus in practice. Natalie Fisher had a great game against Bath and Makenzie Lucus stepped up in the back row defensively. Emily Smith and Annalese Zimmerman played great defensively and offensively for both games. They are doing so well I just want them to get a win.”
The Rockets were hoping to pick up a non-district win on Monday with a trip to Roanoke Valley Christian School in Roanoke but results were too late for publication. Next week the girls are at Narrows Tuesday and at Elliston on Thursday, October 9, to take on Eastern Montgomery.
