The Craig County girls completed a season sweep of William Fleming when the Rockets defeated the Colonels in volleyball last week. Craig took a 25-13, 25-20 and 25-17 win in Roanoke.
“The Fleming game was a great win for the girls,” said Craig coach Suzanne Crawford. “Everyone was on the board again and everyone played hard.”
Cheyanne Bell had a strong all-around game with four aces, four kills and a couple blocks. Natalie Fisher had nine assists and Jenna Boinotte had eight assists to go with five aces and nine digs.
“Cheyanne had a great game on the net,” said Crawford. “Jenna and Natalie were able to make great plays for our outside and middle hitters. Also, our defense in the back row was impressive.”
Emily Smith haad 10 digs to lead the Rockets. Daileigh Donithan had eight digs to go with six kills and three aces. Laiken May had eight digs and Mackenzie Lucas had seven.
“Emily was not letting balls past her in the middle back,” said Crawford. “And Jenna, Daileigh, Laiken, and Makenize were focused and engaged playing in the back row as well.”
Other highlights included Annalese Zimmermanwith five kills, Annika Zimmerman with two and Brooke Wright and Holley Givens came off the bench to combine for five digs.
The win followed a three set loss to Class 3 Staunton River in New Castle, 26-14, 25-19 and 28-26 in a hard-fought third set.
“Our game against Staunton River started out slowly but by the end of the second game the girls were ready to go,” said Crawford. ” We started playing good defense and the girls started picking up balls and getting digs. Emily Smith had some amazing digs in the back row and we were able to put the ball down for the point. Jenna had some impressive serves that Staunton River could not return. If we had played all three sets like the last one I know the outcome would have been different.”
Craig comes into the week at 2-3 overall. The Rockets were scheduled to return the trip to Staunton River on Monday and host North Cross tonight, Wednesday.
“We still have to work on our service receive but moving forward into the season, this a great start for us,” said Crawford. “The team is determined and improves every game. I was very proud of each of them the past two weeks.”
