PAVING INFORMATION

VDOT provides a statewide paving progress map, updated weekly during paving season (April–November). The map shows planned and active projects, helping drivers plan travel and stay safe near work zones. Details: Virginia Roads Paving Map.

INTERSTATE 81

I-81 Ramp Extensions – MM 94 (Pulaski) & MM 105 (Montgomery)

Construction begins in September on two ramp extensions. Work at MM 94 will occur first. Completion summer 2026.
• Nighttime lane closures Sunday–Thursday, 9 p.m.–6 a.m.
• Shoulder closures, narrowed/shifted ramps
• Two-week ramp closures TBD (message boards will alert drivers)

I-81 Widening – Exit 137 to Exit 141 (Roanoke/Salem)

$179M project widening both directions from 2 to 3 lanes. Completion early 2026. Two lanes remain open each way.
• Nighttime alternating lane/shoulder closures, Sunday–Thursday, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. (lanes reduced to 11 feet)
• Ramp closures possible at Exit 140
• Flagging on Routes 635 & 619
• Rough/uneven pavement and shifting traffic patterns
• Narrow ramps, quick merges at Exit 140 and traffic shifts on Wildwood Road (Exit 137)
• 60 mph work zone speed limit strictly enforced

Project includes 6 bridge replacements, 2 bridge widenings, 2.6 miles of sound walls, improvements at Exit 137, and interchange lighting at Exits 137, 140 & 141.

I-81 Widening – MM 143 to 151

Survey and prep work continues. Barrier wall installation late fall/early winter. Completion summer 2031.
• Nighttime lane/shoulder closures Sunday–Thursday, 9 p.m.–6 a.m.
• 60 mph work zone speed limit
• Daytime flagging on Belle Haven Road
• Ramps narrowed at Exits 143, 146 & 150
• Detour signs are for incidents only (not permanent detours)

I-81 Deck Overlay – Peak Creek Bridge (MM 95.7)

Bridge deck repair continues through summer 2025.
• Nighttime single-lane closures Sunday–Friday
• SB closures: 7 p.m.–10 a.m. | NB closures: 6 p.m.–9 a.m.

I-81 New River Bridge Replacement – Exit 105 NB (Montgomery)

Traffic shifted to new NB bridge. Completion in 2025.
• Nighttime lane closures between MM 104–106, 8 p.m.–6 a.m.
• Shoulder closures anytime
• Flagging on Route 605 under the bridge
• Periodic slow-roll traffic holds (steel deliveries)
• Speed limit 60 mph in work zone

I-81 Bridge Maintenance – Pulaski (Route 100 Ramps)
