Superintendent Dr. Jason A. Wheeler shared encouraging news and updates during his report at the Craig County School Board’s regular meeting on Aug. 12.
Wheeler noted that Craig County Public Schools was recognized by the Comprehensive Instructional Program (CIP), a consortium of partner schools that share SOL-aligned resources. The division ranked eighth among members for overall percentage growth in pass rates from 2024 to 2025 and fifth for improved percentile ranks.
“This recognition is a huge shout-out to all of our staff and everyone who has worked diligently within the CIP,” Wheeler said.
He also reflected on the division’s convocation held the previous week, which combined team-building exercises with a challenge for staff to strengthen relationships with students, colleagues, and the community. Activities included dodgeball, relay races, and a mini “Jeopardy” competition.
The first day of school on Aug. 11 went smoothly, Wheeler reported, with only minor issues. He visited every classroom and introduced himself to students, describing the day as “great to see all of our kids and the smiles and enjoyment on their faces.”
Wheeler also introduced Rocket Rundown, a quarterly newsletter highlighting achievements at each school and across the division. The publication includes surveys to gather feedback for a new Superintendent’s Advisory Council, which will include students, parents, staff, and community members. The survey asks stakeholders what the division is doing well and what areas need improvement.
In addition, Wheeler outlined his “Listen, Learn, and Lead” entry plan for the school year. The plan focuses on listening and engaging with schools and the community during the first six months, followed by implementing strategies for growth and improvement in the latter half of the year.
“I want to spend time getting a clear picture of where we stand as a division and then work with staff and the community to move us forward,” Wheeler said.
The superintendent said he would share results of the advisory council survey with both the board and the community once responses are compiled.
