The Craig County girls got their first win of the young volleyball season last week with an impressive three-set win over William Fleming in New Castle. The girls won 25-7, 25-14 and 25-15 against the Class 5 Roanoke city school. “The girls really played good against William Fleming,” said Craig coach Suzanne Crawford. “I was able to play all of my players and everyone contributed.”
Jenna Boittnotte had an impressive game with 14 assists. Emily Smith had an all-around strong game with five aces, three kills, four blocks and four digs.
“Emily is a freshman and has really stepped into her position,” said Crawford. “Annalese Zimmerman communicated extremely well and kept a positive attitude and the momentum high for the girls during the Fleming game.”
Annalese had eight kills and three aces while sister Annika Zimmerman had four kills and four blocks. Cheyanne Bell had eight kills, Daileigh Donithan had nine aces and Natalie Fisher had 11 assists. Also contributing were Makenzie Lucas with five aces, Felicity Fisher with four, Brooke Wright with four digs, Holley Givens with three kills and Laiken May with a couple digs.
“Everyone on the board, very impressive,” said Crawford.
The win put Craig at 1-2 for the season. Craig opened with a three set loss at Glenvar last Monday, August 25, and a day later the Rockets lost their home opener to Roanoke Valley Christian, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21.
The Rockets were scheduled to host Staunton River on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. On Thursday the girls return the trip to William Fleming and next Monday, September 8th, they head to Moneta for another match with Staunton River.
