The Craig County School Board voted unanimously on Aug. 12 to approve hiring an E-Rate consultant to assist the division in navigating the federal program that provides discounts on internet access, telecommunications, and networking infrastructure.
Superintendent Dr. Jason A. Wheeler explained that the E-Rate program can be complex, and the division’s technology director had recommended seeking outside expertise. “This particular representative…that’s all they do is navigate the E-Rate process,” Wheeler told the board. “My recommendation would be for us to approve this for this year and then evaluate it at the end of the cycle for next year.”
The consultant’s fee will be based on a percentage of the funding received. Wheeler acknowledged that the rate—about 22.5 percent—was significant but said the potential benefits outweighed the cost, especially given the division’s infrastructure needs. “If it goes well, fantastic. If we don’t get any more money than we have been getting then we can forego it in the future,” he said.
Last year, Craig County received approximately $10,800 in E-Rate funds. The Education Consortium for Telecommunications Savings (ECTS) will now represent the division in all E-Rate application and funding matters for the 2026–2027 cycle.
After discussion, the board voted 5-0 in favor of the motion, with members Darren Gilreath making the motion and Heather Matheny seconding.
