I-81 Acceleration Ramp Extensions – MM 94 & 105

Construction begins in early September on two ramp extensions: the southbound entrance at MM 94 and the northbound entrance at MM 105. Work at MM 94 will occur first. Completion is expected summer 2026.
• Nighttime lane closures Sunday–Thursday, 9 p.m.–6 a.m.
• Shoulder closures and narrowed/shifted ramps overnight
• Two-week ramp closures (dates TBD; message boards will alert drivers)
I-81 Lane Widening – Exit 137 to Exit 141

The $179 million project to widen I-81 from two to three lanes in both directions continues through early 2026. Two lanes remain open in each direction.
• Alternating nighttime lane/shoulder closures Sunday–Thursday, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. (lanes reduced to 11 feet)
• Exit 140 ramps closed Fridays & Saturdays, 8 p.m.–8 a.m.
• Flagging possible on Routes 635 & 619
• Work zones at Wildwood Road (Exit 137) and Thompson Memorial Drive (Exit 140)
• 60-mph work zone speed limit strictly enforced
• Rough/uneven pavement possible; expect traffic shifts and narrow ramps
The project also includes six bridge replacements, two bridge widenings, 2.6 miles of northbound sound walls, intersection improvements at Exit 137 (Wildwood Road), and interchange lighting at Exits 137, 140, and 141.
I-81 Widening – MM 143 to 151

Survey and prep work underway; barrier wall installation expected late summer/fall. Completion is expected summer 2031.

• Ramps may be narrowed at Exits 143, 146 & 150
• Detour signs are for incident detours only, not permanent reroutes

Traffic has shifted onto the new northbound bridge. Lane closures possible 8 p.m.–7 a.m.; shoulder closures anytime. Completion expected in 2025.
• Nighttime lane closures between MM 104–106
• Flagging on Route 605 under the bridge
• Periodic slow-roll traffic holds for steel deliveries
• Speed limit reduced to 60 mph in work zone
