I-81 ACCELERATION RAMP EXTENSIONS – MILE MARKERS 94 & 105 PULASKI & MONTGOMERY COUNTIES | UPDATED AUG. 15, 2025 Construction begins in early September on two ramp extensions: southbound entrance at MM 94 and northbound entrance at MM 105. Work at MM 94 will occur first. Completion is expected summer 2026.
- Nighttime lane closures Sunday–Thursday, 9 p.m.–6 a.m.
- Shoulder closures and narrowed/shifted ramps overnight
- Two-week ramp closures (dates TBD; message boards will alert drivers)
I-81 Lane Widening – Exit 137 to Exit 141 Roanoke County/Salem | Updated Aug. 15, 2025 The $179 million project to widen I-81 from two to three lanes in both directions continues through early 2026. Two lanes remain open in each direction.
- Alternating nighttime lane/shoulder closures Sunday–Thursday, 8 p.m.–6 a.m. (lane widths reduced to 11 feet)
- Exit 140 on/off ramps closed Fridays & Saturdays, 8 p.m.–8 a.m.
- Possible flagging on Routes 635 & 619
- Work zones at Wildwood Road (Exit 137) and Thompson Memorial Drive (Exit 140)
- 60-mph work zone speed limit strictly enforced
I-81 Widening – Mile Markers 143 to 151 Updated Aug. 15, 2025 Survey and shoulder work underway; barrier wall installation expected late summer/fall. Completion slated for summer 2031.

ORANGE AVENUE (ROUTE 460) OFF-RAMP SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS UPDATED JULY 25, 2025 Shoulder, lane and ramp closures in both directions during nighttime hours. Delays possible.
ROANOKE COUNTY
ROUTE 622 (BRADSHAW ROAD) CULVERT REPLACEMENT Updated Aug. 1, 2025 Temporary signal controls alternating one-lane traffic 24/7. Ten-foot width restriction through Oct. 3. Completion expected October 2025.
Route 220/Route 419 Diverging Diamond Interchange Updated Aug. 15, 2025 Long-term interchange reconfiguration underway with multiple intersection modifications. Expected completion fall 2028.
Route 220 at Southern Hills/Valley Avenue Intersection Updated Aug. 15, 2025 Nighttime lane closures 7 p.m.–6 a.m. New traffic pattern now requires left/right turns with U-turns instead of crossing Route 220.
BOTETOURT COUNTY
ROUTE 621 (ROARING RUN ROAD) CULVERT REPLACEMENT Updated Aug. 8, 2025 Reduced to one lane with temporary signal. Completion fall 2025.
Route 943 (Branch Road) Culvert Replacement Updated Aug. 8, 2025 One-lane traffic with 10-ft width restriction through September. Completion October 2025.
Hunter’s Green Subdivision Resurfacing Updated July 18, 2025 Reconstruction underway; rough surfaces expected for 4–6 weeks until paving.
Route 622 (Dagger Springs Road) Extended Closure Updated July 18, 2025 Closed for approx. four months for culvert and slope work. Completion August 2025.
