INTERSTATE 81 BRIDGE MAINTENANCE IN PULASKI
COUNTY – Bridge maintenance will require the on -ramps to Route 100 off I-81, northbound
and southbound, to be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning, Sunday through Friday mornings. Drivers should watch message boards for the most up to date information as times and days may vary.
INTERSTATE 81 LANE WIDENING CONSTRUCTION
PROJECT EXIT 137 TO EXIT 141 – The $179 million design-build project to widen both
directions of I-81 between mile markers 136.6 and 141.8 from two to three lanes is underway. Work is being performed along a five-mile section of both northbound and southbound Interstate 81 in Roanoke County and the city of Salem. Barrier wa ll is in place along the shoulders. Two
lanes of I -81 traffic in each direction are expected to remain open during the project with
periodic lane closures scheduled during nighttime hours or outside of peak travel times a s
needed. Drivers can expect the following lane closures and upcoming traffic impacts in this area on northbound and southbound I-81:
- LANE CLOSURES: Alternating left and right lane and shoulder closures during nighttime
hours between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, are possible. Lane widths will be
reduced to 11 feet. Nightly lane closures may be in place along the right lane with possible
nightly ramp narrows as needed for guardrail and shoulder strengthening.
- RAMP CLOSURES: Ramp closure of exit 140 on and off ramps onto southbound I-81 in
Salem scheduled to be closed on Friday s and Saturday s from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the
following morning, weather permitting.
- FLAGGIN G OPERATIONS: Flagging operations possible on Route 635 and Route 619.
- UNEVEN PAVEMENT: Drivers may experience some uneven pavement and/or rough
surface throughout the project.
- TRAFFIC SHIFT S: Drivers may experience periodic lane closures, narrow ramp s or quick
merges into traffic onto Thompson Memorial Drive from the southbound or northbound exit
ramp s of exit 140 off of I-81. Work zone located at bottom of the ramp for work on the I-81
bridge at the underpass.
- TRAFFIC SHIFTS ON WILDWOOD ROAD: Expect a work zone with traffic shifts and narrow width on Wildwood Road after exiting I-81 southbound on exit 137 heading towards Salem. Southbound and northbound I-81 exit and entrance ramp narrows are possible at Route 311.
- WORK ZONE SPEED: Drivers should adhere to posted 60 mph speed limits in the work
zone and allow space when following a vehicle. Narrow spacing in lanes due to barrier
walls, lack of shoulders and lane shifts in various locations, are present.
The project also includes replacing six bridges, widening two bridges, installing approximately
2.6 miles of sound barrier walls along northbound I-81, improving the southbound exit 137 off-
ramp intersection at Wildwood Road and adding interchange lighting at exits 137, 140 and 141.
Expected completion in early 2026.
I-81 WIDENING FROM MILE MARKER 143 TO 151 – The I-81
widening project is underway with survey and preparation work. Shoulder strengthening work
will require northbound and southbound lane closures during nighttime hours. Barrier wall
installation expected in late summer or fall. The expected completion for this project is summer
2031.
- WORK ZONE SPEED: Drivers should adhere to posted 60 mph speed limits in the
work zone and allow space when following a vehicle. Speed reminders are posted for
drivers.
- Belle Haven Road – Drivers may see periodic daytime flagging operations in place.
- LANE CLOSURES – Periodic right and left lane closures in place during nighttime
hours 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., on northbound and southbound I-81
- RAMPS – Ramps on I-81, northbound and southbound, may be narrowed at exit 150. 146
and 143.
- DETOU 13 SIGNS: While detour signs are in place on I -81 and routes around the project
such as Route 11 and Plantation Road, these do not designate a permanent or scheduled
detour. The signed detour route is suitable for all traffic during incidents including
tractor -trailers and other large vehicles. These signs are used for traffic incident
detours only.
I-81 NB & SB DECK OVERLAY AT PEAK CREEK MILE
MARKER 95.7 – Repair work is underway on the northbound and southbound bridges on I-81
over Peak Creek near mile marker 95.7. This repair work will require nighttime single lane
closures for the duration of the project. Lane closures may occur nightly from Sunday night
through Friday mornings between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. For the deck overlay process,
lane closures may be in place between Sunday nights through Friday mornings. For the
southbound lanes these will occur between the hours of 7pm and 10am, and for the northbound
lanes between the hours of 6pm through 9am. Details on these closures will be listed below on a
weekly basis. Estimated completion is Summer 2025.
- Alternating nighttime northbound and southbound left and right lane closures may or may
not be in place from mile marker 96 to 94 during the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. while
other work on the project continues.
I-81 NORTHBOUND AT EXIT 105 NEW RIVER BRIDGE
REPLACEMENT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY – Traffic on northbound I-81 has been
switched onto the newly constructed bridge over the New River at the Montgomery/Pulaski
County line. Lane and shoulder closures may be in place near exit 105. Lane closure may be in effect during the week from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Shoulder closures may be in effect at any time during the week. 7low rolls may be performed on I-81 in the north and southbound lanes from mile marker 98 to 109. Speed limit is reduced to 60 miles per hour in the work zone. Shoulder closures will re main in place though the duration of the project.
- LANE CLOSURES : Nighttime right and left lane closures may be in place o n I-81
northbound or southbound between mile marker 106 and 104 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.
- ROUTE 605: Alternating lane closures and flagging operations may be present on Route
605, located under the New River Bridge, for paving operations and work overhead on the bridge.
- SLOW ROLLS: Slow rolls may be utilized periodically on both the northbound and
southbound lanes from mile marker 98-109 for structural steel deliveries and setting beams.
I-81 BRIDGE DECK REPAIRS – Weather permitting, crews will
repair bridge decks on Interstate 81 between mile markers 170 to 89, right and left lane closures
will be in place northbound and southbound during nighttime hours, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Drivers should watch for signs and work zone areas. Delays are possible.
INTERSTATE 581
I-581 PATCHING OPERATIONS – Weather permitting, beginning August 18, crews will perform paving and patching operations. L ane closures will be in place northbound and southbound, Sunday through Thursday, during nighttime hours, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Drivers should watch for signs and expect possible delays.

ERSTATE 77 (CARROLL COUNTY)
I-77 PAVING & PATCHING OPERATIONS – Weather permitting,
crews will perform paving and patching operations on Interstate I-77. Right , left and center lane
closures will be in place northbound and southbound, Monday through Friday, during nighttime
hours, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. Drivers should watch for signs and expect possible delays.
I-77 BRIDGE DECK REPAIRS – Weather permitting, crews will
perform paving operations on Interstate 77. R ight and left lane closures will be in place
northbound and southbound during nighttime hours, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.

- Bridge deck overlays on I -77 from 8.78 miles north of the North Carolina line to 6.24
miles south of the intersection with Route 58 are underway . Lane closures will be in place underneath the bridge on Route 148. Expected completion date is scheduled for
Fall 2025.
ROANOKE CITY
ORANGE AVENUE OFF RAMP SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS –
Drivers can expect shoulder closures , narrow ramps and lane closures eastbound and westbound
on Route 460 (Orange Avenue ) from Burrell Street northwest and Gainsboro Road northwest to
the intersection of Williamson Road northeast and on the off ramp from I-581. Shoulder closures
expected on Route 460 (Orange Avenue) eastbound and westbound with right and left lane
closures in place during nighttime hours. Delays are possible.
ROANOKE COUNTY
ROUTE 622 (BRADSHAW ROAD) CULVERT REPLACEMENT –
Work is underway on a culvert replacement over Mason Creek on Route 622 (Bradshaw Road).
The culvert is located about 6.8 miles from Route 311. A temporary signal is in place to control
traffic around the clock to allow drivers to alternate using one open lane during the culvert replacement un til sometime in August 2025. The re will be a 10-foot width restriction in place
through October 3. Drivers should expect delays in the area or seek alternate routes. Electronic
message boards will be posted to alert motorists to the upcoming roadwork and traffic impacts. Work is scheduled for completion in October 2025, weather permitting .
ROUTE 943 ( BRANCH ROAD) CULVERT REPLACEMENT –
Work is underway on a culvert replacement over a branch of Back Creek on Route 943 (Branch
Road). This culvert is located 0.05 mile from Route 731 (Lewis Road) and 0.1 mile from the end of state maintenance on Route 943. The road is reduced to one lane with a width restricted of 10 feet. Temporary signs are in place and traffic is controlled by a stop sign through September. Work is scheduled for completion in October 2025, weather permitting .
ROUTE 220/ROUTE 419 DIVERGING DIAMOND
INTERCHANGE – The Route 220/Route 419 interchange project is underway. It will be
reconfigured with a diverging diamond concept and multiple intersections on both Route 220 and Route 419 will be modified to enhance signal timing and reduce congestion. The intersections on Route 220 are at27alley Avenue/Southern Hills Drive, Crossbow Circle/Pheasant Ridge Road, Buck Mountain Road/Stable Road and Indian Grave Road/Clearbrook Village Lane. The intersecti ons on Route 419 are at Ogden Road, Elm View Road and South Peak Boulevard. With
multiple activities scheduled, completion at different locations will take place throughout the life of the project. Expected completion is fall 2028.
ROUTE 220 AT SOUTHERN HILLS & VALLEY AVENUE
INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS – C onstruction activities for this project are underway
starting with lane closures during nighttime hours from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning,
Sunday night through Friday morning. Shoulder closures possible during daytime hours.
BEDFORD COUNTY
ROUTE 460 AND ROUTE 697 IMPROVEMENTS – Work is underway to
improve Route 460 at Route 697 (Camp Jaycee Road). This project will c onstruct median turn
lanes for U -turns and close three existing crossovers and modify one existing crossover.
Currently, work to flush pipes out under Route 460 is underway. Drivers can expect inside lane
closure on eastbound and westbound Route 460. Work is expected to be completed in late 2026. ROUTE 6 83 CLOSED FOR TWO PIPE REPLACEMENTS – Effective
Wednesday, July 30, 2025, a section of Route 683 (Sharps Mountain Road) will be closed for two pipe replacements. The first structure is located 1.30 miles west of Route 682 ( Kelso Mill
Road ) and the second structure is located 1.30 miles east of Route 682 ( Kelso Mill Road ). Traffic
will be able access Sharps Mountain Road using Kelso Mill Road to detour around the closure. Work is scheduled for completion by approximately Friday, August 15, weather permitting.
ROUTE 620 CLOSED FOR BRIDGE REPAIRS – Due to damage to
the bridge, Route 620 (Bateman Road) is closed on either side of the bridge located near Homestead Drive. Residents will have access to their homes but through traffic will need to seek alternate routes. Repairs are being assessed at this time and there is no estimated time for the
bridge to reopen.
ATKINSON HOLLOW ROAD CULVERT REPLACEMENT – A
temporary signal w as installed in May as part of work to replace a culvert on Route 839
(Atkinson Hollow Road) in Bedford County. The culvert is located four miles northeast of
Stewartsville and about 0.4 mile north of Route 619 (Jordantown Road). Drivers should expect delays until sometime in late July, weather permitting. Temporary signals on the roadway and in front of driveways will control traffic around the clock to allow drivers to alternate using one open lane during the culvert replacement and ability to nturn out of driveways in the constriction zone . A width restriction of 11 feet will be in place until the signal is removed. Signs have been
posted to alert motorists to the upcoming roadwork and traffic impacts. Work is expected to be completed in late July/August 2025.
ROUTE 666 B RIDG E REPAIRS OVER ELK CREEK – The bridge
repai rs on the Elkton Farm Road Truss Bridge on Ro ute 666 (Elkton Farm Road) over Elk
Creek are underway. The bridge is located 1.8 mile s east of Route 622 to l.60 mi le west of Route
- The road is scheduled to close on August 25 and remain closed with a detour in place until
May 2026, weather permitting . Estimated completion of repairs is summer 2026.
BOTETOURT COUNTY
REDUCED TO ONE LANE
FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT – Work is underway on Route 621 (Roaring Run Road) for
a culvert replacement in the vicinity of 618 Roaring Run Road. As of Tuesday, July 15, Route
621 (Roaring Run Road) is reduced to one lane of traffic controlled by a temporary signal that
will alternate traffic through the work zone until completion of the project . Delays are possible.
Expected completion is fall 2025. (UPDATED 725 HUNTER’S GREEN PAVING RECONSRUCTION OPERATION –
Beginning Monday, July 7
, the state routes within Hunter’s Green subdivision will be
reconstructed . Drivers may experience delays and rough road surfaces that may appear gravel-
like during this process. Once the surface treatment is applied, this will not be the final riding surface on the roadway and may continue to feel rough for 4- 6 weeks until the routes can be
paved with traditional asphalt concrete pavement.
(UPDATED 725 ROUTE 622 EXTENDED CLOSURE – A section of Route 622
(Dagger Springs Road) in the Eagle Rock area of Botetourt County is closed for approximately
four months. The closure starts a mile north of Route 612 (Blue Grass Trail) and extends about
1.2 miles to Tate Road. Drivers should follow detour signs. Work will include drainage
improvements, culvert replacements and major slope work. Expected completion in August
2025.
CRAIG BOTETOURT SCENIC TRAIL BRUSH CUTTING AND
STABILIZATION WORK – Residents along the former Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Craig
Valley Branch railbed in Botetourt and Craig counties may notice maintenance work continuing
on the old railbed. These activities are intended to prevent additional deterioration and to help
designers who are developing plans for the Craig Botetourt Scenic Trail. VDOT continues
to collect d 23ta and conduct site visits and field reviews on the railbed. The design plans for
Craig Botetourt Scenic Trail are still being refined and a specific schedule for construction has
yet to be determined.
CARROLL COUNTY
ROUTE 764 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – Route 764 is closed with
a detour in place for a bridge replacement project over Greasy Creek. The bridge is located 2.8
miles from the Pulaski line to 0.05 mile of Route 765 north. The project is estimated to be completed in September 2025.
ROUTE 939 CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC – Beginning Monday,
August 4, a portion of Route 939 (Klondike Road) will be closed to traffic at the intersection of Route 620 (Crooked Creek Road) for a pipe repair. Drivers can detour around the closure by following directional signs that will be in place to assist the traveling public. Weather permitting,
this closure is expected to remain in place for one week.
CRAIG COUNTY
CRAIG BOTETOURT SCENIC TRAIL BRUSH CUTTING AND

FRANKLIN COUNTY
ROUTE 744 PIPE REPLACEMENT – Effective Monday, August 11, a
section of Route 744 ( Webster Corner Road ) will be closed for a pipe replacement. The structure
is located 2.90 miles north of Route 643 ( Dillons Mill Road ) and 0.10 mile south of Route 726
(Wades Gap Road ). A detour will be in place. Work is scheduled for completion by
approximately Friday, August 22, weather permitting .
ROUTE 865 BRIDGE PROJECT – Beginning Monday, July 21, a section
of Route 865 (Timber Line Road) will be closed for a bridge maintenance project. The structure
is located 0.40 mile east of Route 605 (Henry Road) and 1.00 miles west of Route 778
(Republican Church Road). Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed August
14, 2025.
ROUTE 613 BRIDGE MAINTENANCE CLOSURE – Work is
underway on a section of Route 613 ( Naff Road ) will be closed for a bridge maintenance project.
The structure is located 0.20 mile south of Route 726 ( Wades Gap Road ) and 1.60 miles north of
Route 852 (Guthrie Road ). Residents living on the road will have access to their homes on either
side of the closure but through traffic will not be able to cross the bridge. A detour will be in
place and dr ivers will need to seek alternate rou tes around the closure. Work is scheduled for
completion in September 2025.
ROUTE 640 CLOSURE FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT –
Work to replace a pipe on a section of Route 640 (6 Mile Post Road) is underway and the road is closed. The structure is located approximately 0.20 mile north of Route 795 ( Stave
Mill Road ) and 0.30 mile south of Route 1033 (Highfield Road). A detour will be in place
using Route 756 (Old Forge Road). Work is scheduled for completion in August 2025.
ROUTE 705 CLOSURE FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT –
Effective Monday, June 16, a section of Route 705 (Chestnut Hill Road) will be closed for a bridge replacement. The structure is located 0.30 mile south of Route 714 (Washboard Road) and 1.30 miles north of Route 954 (Ball Park Drive). Drivers will need to seek alternate routes arou nd the closure. Work is scheduled for completion November
- CONNECTOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION CLOSES
BRICK CHURCH ROAD – During the week of November 11, drivers who use the
intersection of Route 697 (Brick Church Road) and Route 220 (Virgil Goode Highway) in the Wirtz area of Franklin County began to reroute due to a project to build a new
connector road.
- Brick Church Road will be closed to through traffic starting just east of its intersection with Route 696 (Pleasant Breeze Drive). Drivers heading east on Brick Church Road toward Route 220 will need to use Pleasant Breeze Drive to access southbound Route 220.
- Southbound Route 220 drivers who normally turn onto Brick Church Road will need turn at Pleasant Breeze Drive to return to Brick Church Road if they are heading to destinations west of Pleasant Breeze Drive. Local traffic will still be able use the section of Brick Church Road between Route 220 and Pleasant
Breeze Drive to access homes and businesses.
- During construction, flaggers will control traffic at times and a temporary signal will be installed at the intersection of Brick Church Road and Pleasant Breeze Drive, so drivers should expect possible delays and use caution in the work zone. Motorists should pay attention to signs and electronic message boards.
These traffic changes will remain in place once a new 0.4 -mile section of roadway is
built to connect Brick Church Road and Commonwealth Parkway. As part of the
project, a new cul -de-sac will be constructed on Brick Church Road just east of its
intersection with Pleasant Breeze Drive. The road project is being administered by
Franklin County and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 202 5.
GILES COUNTY
ROUTE 219 PIPE REPLACEMENT – Weather permitting, work to replace a
pipe on Route 219 (Federal Street) in Giles County, just north of Rich Creek, will begin on
Saturday, August 2, during daytime hours and continue on Wednesday, August 6 during nighttime hours. Drivers should expect delays.
- On Saturday, August 2, flaggers will control traffic between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Route 219 for preliminary work to prepare for the pipe replacement.
- On Wednesday, August 6, Thursday, August 7 and Friday, August 8 , flaggers will be
controlling traffic during nighttime hours between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning.
Message boards will be in place to alert drivers to the upcoming nighttime road work and announce any revisions to the schedule due to weather. ROUTE 778 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER SINKING CREEK
– Work is underway on Route 778 (Apache Road) to replace the bridge over Sinking Creek. The bridge is located off of Route 460 westbound across from the intersection with R oute 730
(Eggleston Road). The road will be closed with a detour in place. Message boards will alert drivers of detour. Completion is expected summer 2026.
- DETOUR SCHEDULED: Detour is in place. Drivers should watch for message boards .
HENRY COUNTY
ROUTE 683 CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC – Beginning Monday,
August 11, a portion of Route 683 (The Great Road) will be closed from north of Route 682 (River Road) and south of Route 907 (Process Road) for a pipe repair. Drivers can detour around the closure by following directional signs that will be in place to assist the t raveling public.
Weather permitting, this closure is scheduled for completion in October 2025. ROUTE 706 CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC – Beginning Monday,
August 11, Route 706 (Dye Plant Road) will be closed to traffic from Route 220 business (Greensboro Road) to Route 707 (Rivermont Heights Road) for several pipe replacements. During this time, drivers can detour around the closure by following directional signs tha t will be
in place to assist the traveling public. Weather permitting, there will be intermittent daytime
closures during the work hours from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for approxi mately two weeks.
ROUTE 683 CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC – Beginning Monday,
August 18, a portion of Route 683 (Meadowood Trail) will be closed from 0.5 of a mile north of Route 1530 (Schoolfield Drive) and 0.6 of a mile south of Route 627 (Hodges Farm Road) for a pipe replacement at Jordan Creek. During this time, a detour will be utilized, and directional
signs will be in place to assist the traveling public. Weather permitting, this closure is scheduled
for completion September 19, 2025.
ROUTE 220 LANE CLOSURES FOR PEDESTRIAN PROJECT –
A pedestrian crossing installation is underway at the Daniels Creek Road intersection on Route
- A lane closure will be in place on Route 220 and turning lanes on Daniels Creek Road will
also be closed . Drivers should watch for message boards and signage. Expected completion is
scheduled for October 2025. ROUTE 220 AND DYER STREET – Intersection improvements are
underway at Route 220 and Dyer Street. Drivers can expect lane and shoulder closures in the area and should watch message boards for traffic pattern shifts and closures. MOSS STREET LANE CLOSURES FOR PEDESTRIAN
PROJECT – P edestrian improvement work began along Moss Street in Martinsville on April 7.
Driver should expect daytime lane closures in the area. Expected completion is October 2025.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
ROUTE 8 PARK AND RIDE PROJECT – Work is underway to
build a park and ride lot on Route 8 near the entrance/exit to I-81 at mile marker 114. This project will include a parking structure, bus shelter, as well as road and pedestrian improvements for adjoining streets. Traffic impacts will include alternating lane closures on Route 8 between
Mud Pike Road and the entrance/exit ramps for I-81 at MM 114 and shoulder and single lane closures with flagging operations on Route 666 (Mud Pike Road) at the intersection with Moose Drive and between the intersection s of Mud Pike Road and College St reet except during peak
hours, Monday through Friday. Expected completion is winter 2027.
- TRAFFIC SHIFT: Traffic shift s may be in place on Route 666 (Mud Pike Road).
Drivers should use caution.
- LANE CLOSURES: There will be temporary lane closures in place in the following
locations:
o Eastbound lane and turn lane on Mud Pike Road.
o Northbound right turn lane at traffic light on Route 8.
o Right turn lane at traffic light on Moose Drive.
PATRICK COUNTY
ROUTE 773 CLOSED FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT – Route 773
(Ararat Highway) road work and pipe replacement is underway. The pipe replacement is located approximately 0.58 mile east of Route 781 (Lower Water Bridge Lane). Message boards will alert drivers of any traffic impacts. The project will be completed August 1 5, 2025.
ROUTE 58 LOVER’S LEAP PROJECT – Construction is underway
on Lover’s Leap area of Route 58. Current work includes clearing and grading activities on the west and east portions of the project. A 45- mph speed reduction is in place on Route 58 for
the entire length of the project. Drivers should expect flagging operations during day and nighttime hours. Message boards are in place to alert traffic and drivers should expect delays. Estimated completion date is Summer 2026.
- JULY 9 TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE – Route 58 traffic has been shifted onto a
new 1.25-mile section roadway starting 0.5 mile east of Route 640 (Central Academy Road). Two-way traffic will be routed onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes. As
part of this shift, a new connection between Route 8 and Route 58 will be opened just
west of the current Route 8 and Route 58 intersection.
- JULY 14 TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE – T raffic has been shifted onto a new 1.5-
mile section of Route 58 beginning at the western end of the project near Poor Farmers Farm. Two -way traffic will be routed onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes. A new
connection between the new lanes and existing Route 58 will be provided to maintain access to Poor Farmers Farm, Fred Clifton Park and the Lovers Leap Overlook.
- TRAFFIC SHIFT: A traffic shift is in place approximately 1.5 miles east of Lovers
Leap Overlook and 1.5 miles west of Route 640 (Central Academy Road). Drivers should expect this shift to remain in place through the end of 2025.
- TRAFFIC PATTERN – The new traffic pattern on a 0.4 -mile section of RT 58, 1.8
miles east of Cloudbreak R oad, is in place . Traffic in a curve on the road widening
project is using a straighter section of R oute 58 with a shoulder. Th is slight shift will
remain in place until further notice. Flaggers may be in place.
- TRUCK ESCAPE RAMP CLOSURE: The escape ramp located 2.9 miles east of the
Lovers Leap Overlook/Fred Clifton Park and 1.1 miles east of Dehart Botanical Gardens
has been permanently closed. Please be aware of brake check points along Route 58 and
check your brakes frequently. A brake check point is located 0.6 miles east of Route 610
(Cloudbreak Road) near Poor Farmer’s Farm. All trucks MUST check their brakes
prior to traveling down the mountain.
- BLASTING NOTICE : Blasting operations are underway on the project. Intermittent
blasting will be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays and continue at
various locations on the project through summer 2025. For blasting that is close to Route
58, traffic in both directions may be blocked for approximately 15- 20 minutes at a time.
Drive and residents along the Route 58 corridor should expect loud noise and allow extra
travel time. Electronic message boards will be used to inform drivers of scheduled
blasting that will impact traffic.
- DETOUR SIGNS: While detour signs in a fluorescent pink color are in place, these do
not designate a permanent or scheduled detour. The signed detour route is suitable
for all traffic during incidents including tractor -trailers and other large vehicles.

ROUTE 58 LOVER’S VESTA PROJECT – The Route 58 Vesta
project is underway near the Route 58 Business eastern intersection in Meadows of Dan and ends about 0.5 mile east of Route 610 (Cloudbreak Road). In addition to widening Route 58 from two lanes to four lanes, the project includes replacing the existing bridge over the Dan River with two new bridges. The Vesta project adjoins the Lovers Leap widening project that is currently under
construction. This spring, drivers may see activity in the area as soil samples and gathering other
data needed to finalize the road design takes place. Residents may notice temporary access roads and brush cutting. A citizens information meeting will be held about the details of the project and is anticipated to be held in early 2026.
