The Craig County School Board approved a new compensation policy July 21 for teachers who take on a fourth instructional block in place of their planning period.
Teachers who agree to the additional teaching load will receive a stipend equal to 22.5% of their 200-day base salary, not including any other stipends. The compensation will be paid out over 12 months and is based on 180 instructional days.
According to the approved plan, this stipend will appear on annual contracts but will not be counted toward the Virginia Retirement System salary. The compensation amount may vary each year depending on the division’s instructional needs.
The policy had previously been introduced and was approved following a motion by board member Faye Powers and a second by Walter Marsden. The vote was unanimous.
The decision was made as part of a broader effort to clarify and standardize how teachers are compensated for instructional responsibilities beyond the standard teaching schedule.
Board members present for the vote were Trace Bellassai, Darren Gilreath, Faye Powers, Heather Matheney, and Walter Marsden.
