From the February 2, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record
Lenny Wilkins has now passed 900 wins in the National basketball Association, and is closing in on Red Auerbach’s record of 938.
With less than 40 games remaining in this season, Wilkins should get the win sometime early next year. This leaves Auerbach time to hire someone to bump him off before he gets to the milestone.
Sounds stupid, doesn’t it? Well, you just never know anymore. I thought the Monica Seles stabbing was an isolated incident, then this Tonya Harding stuff comes along. What’s next?
What if the Bills and Cowboys meet in next year’s Super bowl? Take out Emmitt Smith and The Bills might have a chance. Probably not though.
I have a feeling this skating stuff is a financial thing. A lot of money and endorsements come with a gold medal in figure skating and without Nancy Kerrigan I there someone else figures to have a better chance of winning.
I hope Tonya Harding remains on the Olympic team. It will certainly make the skating championships a lot more fun to watch.
Plus, I don’t think we should punish someone until we’re sure she’s guilty. I wouldn’t take to e word of this Jeff Gillooly character. He’s lied about enough other stuff, why take his word on this?
I think Harding should be allowed to skate, and it it’s later proven she’s guilty you can always take the medal away. If she even wins one, that is.
Can you imagine how hard it would be to practice with an audience full of reporters and cameramen every day? How long do you think bobby Knight would put up with that?
I don’t usually watch the ice skating championships, but this year I wouldn’t miss it.
So Buddy Ryan is back in the NFC. It just shows there’s an owner out there who’s not afraid to win.
When phoenix owner Bill Bidwell made Ryan coach and general manager of his team last week, he made football’s strongest division even stronger. Ryan will bring a swagger and tenacity to that team that will make the Cardinals, who don’t lack for talent, immediate contenders.
This is the perfect job for Ryan. He’s a keen judge of talent and by being GM and coach he won’t have to pull any punches, so to speak.
The Cardinals are a warm-weather team that plays on natural turf, and they’ve shown they’ll put out the bills to sign top talent. It’s a perfect time to hire Ryan, because there are some great defensive free agents on both the Philadelphia and Houston roster who would love to play for Buddy.
Personally, I have mixed emotions about the move. I’m one of Buddy’s supporters, and there certainly are few around here. Still, I remember how he took a rag-tag Eagles team and put the in the playoffs three years, and I appreciate that.
On the other side of the coin, now the Eagles will have to play Buddy’s Cardinals twice every season, As an Eagles fan I used to count on two wins over the Cards every year, but with Ryan as coach, I’ll be happy with a split.
You Cowboys, Redskins, and Giants fans should be a little worried, too. The toughest division in football just got a little tougher, like him or not.,

Talk about adding insult to injury.
The other day I was in a department store when I spotted a young man with an Eagles jacket and hat. I complimented him on the outfit and mentioned that I was also a fan.
“I used to be,” he said, “but I’m a Dallas fan now.”
