Another busy week for Rocket sports

The weather is warming up and the Craig County spring sports teams are busy with games, matches and meets this week.

On Tuesday the baseball and softball teams were scheduled to play at Narrows and the soccer team was home for their “Senior Night” against the Green Wave. Today, Wednesday, the track team has a meet at Giles.

On Thursday Craig’s baseball and softball teams are home to take on Bland County, both at 5 pm. Friday the soccer team will head to Covington for a game against the Boys’ Home team.

The Rocket baseball team is still looking for a win coming into the week after dropping two games to fall to 0-11. The Rockets dropped a 15-2 decision to Staunton River in Moneta and took a 4-1 loss to Parry McCluer at home last Thursday. Jaycob Wolfe pitched a solid game against the Blues but the Rocket offense was shut down in a good old fashioned pitchers’ duel.

The softball team also dropped two and they come into the week at 2-6 after falling to Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy and Parry McCluer.

“ A couple of really rough games last week,” said coach Elaina Wolfe-Carper. “Our defense was sloppy and it cost us a lot of runs. Both games should have been much closer. Errors and inconsistent performance on the basics really took us out of both.”

Craig fell 18-1 at the Lake and the Rockets were the victims of a no-hitter. Layla Dooley scored the only run for Craig and only three of the Ospreys’ runs were earned.

On Thursday in New Castle the Rockets had 12 hits but lost to the visiting Blues, 23-5. Parry McCluer scored 12 runs in the first inning and led 20-1 after three frames. Annalese Zimmerman had three hits for Craig and Daleigh Donithan had two. Kallie Fisher had a triple.

The Craig soccer team is 0-4 and the Rockets are still looking for their first goal. The Rockets had some chances last week but couldn’t connect in a 4-0 loss to the Boys’ Home at Mitchell Field.

“We had so many attempts on goal,” said coach Crystal Hickson.
