Final work on the budget was held prior to the New Castle Town Council meeting on Monday, April 21. After the meeting was called to order, with Mayor Lenny MacDonald, Karen Crush, Robyn Foster, Robert E. Lee and Vice Mayor Tommy Zimmerman in attendance, the budget was passed unanimously. It will be published in the coming weeks.

Other business discussed was the Resolution for the VA250 events celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. At the March meeting, Diane Givens and Tina Crawford gave an overview of plans for a kickoff event to be held on May 10. Council members gave permission for use of Town property for the event. The celebration activities will include an antique quilt show sponsored by the Craig County Historical Society, members of the Fincastle Company, 18th Century Living History Interpreters portraying a militia unit which served in the American Revolution. The farmers market is also holding the season opening on May 10. The resolution was passed.

Changes to the Public Service Authority are impacting town residents. Updated regulations on installation of new septic systems have been requested for clarity. The purchase of TDS Telecom and Citizen Communications by RiverStreet is still in flux, with bill fees to be charged for accounts paid by check. Research on new services is required. The previous location of Mike’s Dog House may be getting a new business. Details have not been presented to the Town Council for review or approval as yet.

Concern over water standing in places in the alley behind Main Street had council member Robyn Foster request information from Adams Construction. A brief report was provided for consideration on how to move forward. Several options were presented and more research is necessary. The council is also expected to have the town sign repainted, as soon as removal and delivery of the sign can be organized. The next meeting will be Monday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
